Registration No.: VFF 742, Chassis No.: 57314, Engine No.: 57314, Coachwork: Stelvio Cabriolet by Gangloff, Price Estimate:£120,000-130,000
On Auction at Coys of Kensington, June 13, 1996
This particular Type 57, carrying the desirable Stelvio cabriolet coachwork, was delivered to its first owner, a M. Dettwiler of Alsace, on 7th March 1935. M. Dettwiler kept the car throughout the war and in 1951 decided to replace it with the latest Bugatti, the Type 101.
Due to the many years of engineering dormancy as a result of the war the Type 101 was in fact a greatly improved Type 57. There had been no time to produce a brand new model so Ettore Bugatti turned his skills to developing the ultimate Type 57, the Type 101.
Supplies of new Type 101s were limited and M. Marco of Bugatti was unable to supply his customer with a car. He was, however, able to offer M. Dettwiler the next best alternative, which was that the factory would entirely recondition his Type 57 with all the latest technology and modifications available. This course of action was chosen and M. Dettwiler's car was returned to him in the ultimate form available. M. Dettwiler retained the car for a further nine years before finally selling it in 1960 via Jean de Dobbeleer, a noted Bugatti dealer in Brussels, to an American, Mr H E Neauling. Mr Neauling took the car back to America and sold it to a friend from Harvard University, Geoffrey Howard. Mr Howard was a director of Marlboro Motors in Princeton, New Jersey.
Mr Howard later sold the car to Walter Weimer of Pennsylvania. Mr Weimer owned the car from 1964 until 1987, selling it in 1987 to an English collector. The car was then comprehensively restored by A B Price, the noted Bugatti specialist and previous chairman of the Bugatti Owners Club.
Chassis 57314 is thus presented in excellent restored condition. Rarely does one have the opportunity to buy not only a well restored example of this great Grand Routier Bugatti, but also a car that has such obvious advantages over any other 57 thanks to all the previously mentioned factory modifications.
