BUGATTI 16 CYLINDRESType 45 & 47By Jean-Philippe Müller During World War I, Ettore Bugatti developed the legendary U-16 cylinder engine for aircraft and further refined it in 1929 for use in the Bugatti Type 45 and Type 47. Unfortunately, the engines were not reliable, so the Type 45 and Type 47 could only be used in hill climbs and not in circuit races. Their only appearances were at the Klausen and Bernina hill climbs in 1930. Although they won both races, both types subsequently disappeared from the scene. The book describes the development of the U-16 engine and their use in the Bugatti Types 45 and 47 in racing. It also explores the remarkable history of the Type 45's chassis and the restoration of both cars. The book contains numerous contemporary drawings and photographs, some of which were previously unknown. An extensive photo gallery documents both cars in their current condition. It is the first comprehensive work on a brief but extremely exciting chapter in Bugatti's history.
